Social justice is something that every society must strive for. All around the world, people face a multitude of challenges that inhibit them from furthering themselves in their societies. One may feel helpless knowing the inequalities that are faced by those who are least deserving of them, and simple charities may not seem to provide the systemic impact needed to empower those in need. However, change is on the horizon:
The Sikhi Alpha Foundation is a social justice organization that strives to provide resources and opportunities that create social equity for families all over the world. Founded by Jujhar Singh, this foundation stresses issues regarding lack of education, domestic violence, and overall societal injustices. Their main goal is to target socio-economic imbalances in these areas, and is done so through prioritizing programs that provide financial literacy and economic empowerment.
Sikhi Alpha’s emphasis on financial literacy stems from their belief that “basic human needs include education.” This education is not simply of literary canons and mathematical equations, but also of the importance of money and managing one’s own finances. The organization believes that teaching skills centered around financial responsibility will be most effective in empowering certain individuals.
One of the targets of this foundation is children, specifically elementary school students. Sikhi Alpha’s Equity in Education campaign plans to provide financial literacy materials for elementary schools in low-income areas. These materials include lesson plans that teach financial responsibility and money management at an elementary level, allowing students to have a strong foundation in finances before they enter the real world.
Sikhi Alpha’s second focus is on domestic violence survivors. The organization cares deeply for the safety of those suffering domestic abuse and works tirelessly with domestic violence shelters to provide their resources. Similar to the Equity in Education campaign, Sikhi Alpha believes that providing a financial literacy education will allow survivors to escape their situations and become independent from their previous lives.
In both the cases of children and domestic violence survivors, financial literacy will allow individuals to become self-sufficient, and ultimately work to escape their situations. Sikhi Alpha’s resources that provide comprehensive knowledge of finances will allow the foundation to meet their goals of equality, equity, and justice, and ultimately ensure the safety and livelihoods of thousands around the world.
